ERC Consolidator Grant to improve calculations of turbulent flows
Benjamin Sanderse, head of the Scientific Computing group at CWI, has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant of €2 million for the project SYMBIOSIS, which runs for five years.
Turbulent flows are too fine-grained to simulate in full, so simulations rely on closure models to account for what the grid cannot resolve. Physics-based closure models are stable but often inaccurate; data-driven ones can be accurate but may be unstable and generalize poorly. SYMBIOSIS aims to combine the two through the concept of entropy, producing closure models that are at once mathematically stable and physically faithful.
The methods are aimed at problems where prediction quality has real consequences: optimizing wind energy, designing CO2 transport systems, and modelling the climate.
